აბსტრაქტი. There is a growing trend of implementing facial recognition technology (FRT) in higher education institutions to enhance security and administrative functions. However, this technology raises significant privacy concerns regarding the protection of personal data. This study examined students' privacy concerns related to the use of FRT at a private institution in South Africa. Although FRT improves safety, it introduces notable privacy risks that current safeguards fail to fully address. The research focused on student concerns about the collection, storage, and use of their facial recognition data. A survey using stratified random sampling was conducted with 106 participants to assess their perceptions of their privacy in relation to facial recognition technologies and how their data is safeguarded against disclosure. The findings revealed significant privacy concerns and scepticism about the adequacy of current safeguards from the students. These results contribute to the ongoing debate on balancing technological advancement with individual privacy and suggest ways to improve privacy measures in FRT systems.
