ABSTRACT. Fitness has become increasingly popular, with that we are seeing an increase in fitness tracking applications too. Tools for sharing fitness data and for monitoring our physical activities. There are many benefits those platforms offer to users, from motivation, engagement from peers, detailed analytics, they also introduce important concerns related to cybersecurity and privacy. This paper shows how fitness tracking applications collect and analyze user’s data, in particular we will look into location-based information, and how such data can cause security risks when not properly managed or shared. The analysis is done through real-world incidents, including cases where publicly shared data exposed high-ranking individuals, government locations, travel or rather fitness patterns. The paper highlights the potential risks associated with these technologies. It explores both intentional data sharing and unintentional data exposures and how they can lead to threats, such as tracking, invading privacy and targeted attacks either on individuals or properties. The paper evaluates the measures implemented by companies to address these risks, which includes better privacy settings aimed towards end users.
